If your a fan of Noir, you'll probably like this anime. Instead of assassin history though, Witch Hunter Robin goes into the idea of witches as a part of modern life. With a soundtrack of mostly non-vocal songs, but an opening theme much like The Real Folk Blues from Cowboy Bebop, witch hunting is back in style.

"Three hundred and twenty years have passed since the coven sank in the dark..."

Present day Japan, witches are people with special powers which are hidden from society. Records are kept in special departments and an organization called Solomon is in charge of hunting the ones who use their power to hunt humans. Robin, a 15 year old girl that had been raised in a convent in Europe arrives as a replacement hunter to a smaller branch of Solomon. There, she joins a team of hunters (witches who've undergone a special test) who use their powers to trap malicious witches with a substance called Orbo. However, Robin soon comes to question their motives and the power that witched possess...

At first, the story revolves around Robin and the rest of the hunters, which are interesting themselves and everyone seems to carry some kind of burden. The male lead is Amon, who is Robin's partner and is surrounded in a dark cloud of mystery. Robin isn't very talkative, but she does seem to get along with Micheal, the group's hacker. Though it starts simple, the story soon evolves into searching for the truth though pools of lies and digging through the past of witches.

Witch Hunter Robin is as close as you can come to "dark" anime that is action and adventure as well, without horror. The overall animation is extremely smooth, and has a modern steel-gothic look. There is a definite lack of bright colors, and the mood is almost always gloomy, but the music is soft and blends in gently. There are action scenes, since witches are being hunted, and those are everything you would expect. The first few episodes go very slow though, and things seem almost simple. Once the second season start, the story really picks up and of course things get difficult again...

The first episode I saw of Witch Hunter Robin really got me curious. Robin looked really cool and the bg designs of the anime really stuck. It took a while to get through the next eight or so because they just dealt with specific witches and resembled some kind of supernatural crime drama. I was caught by surprise later though, so the I was impressed with the series. The music is not bad at at all, but my favorite is the opening theme, "Shell".
